My first impression of Memphis – People lived in a wooden house!

The first day arriving in Memphis I stayed at my aunt’s house where I felt kind of insecure to sleep in. Why? The house was built in woods. To Americans, it is absolute common to them but to me, from an island country which has twenty to thirty felt-earthquakes a year, wooden house was a totally different and hard to adjust to experience to me. All of housing in Taiwan was in concrete and steel.

I couldn’t help to worry about any fatal accidents which might happen, for example, a drunk driver lost control of his car and dashed into the house or some lunatic carried a gun and swept shooting in the street. I tossed and turned all night long and did not know if it was because I missed my family too much or too worried about the wooden house.

You might have tossed and turned because of the time difference, but I can understand the insecurity you felt in a wooden house. The truth is, they aren't as secure as brick houses. A few years ago, we had a terrible wind storm that knocked down many trees. The trees that fell on wooden house crushed many of them.

Wooden house can be very strong and secured. I know it, because in Russia we have a lot of wooden buildings even churches, and they are relaible, if they was done from whole wood like a pine. People believe that they have ecological properties.
